Those who are successful at keeping their weight off don't overeat and they don't create limits. As the only society in the history of humanity to actively go low fat, it is no surprise to see we are the fattest.

As doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, and providers in Pediatrics and Neonatal Medicine we advise parents on the best ways to foster health and well being for their children and their family. As professionals in the medical field we often fall short in taking our own advice, which in the end affects our own health and our lives. We give parents brochures and pamphlets to supplement the conversations we have. It's called anticipatory guidance. As adults have access to information from a myriad of sources including books and magazines, resources online, and our associations. If anything we probably have an abundance of information with a lack of taking the next steps towards using the information to live our best life. This is true for our health, our wealth, and our overall well being.

Change is tough. Change is scary. If change were easy, there would not be millions of dollars in books about how to face change being sold. Change in your nutrition or health is no different than change in other areas of your life. Embracing a new style of eating can feel uncomfortable and unfamiliar. I know - I have been there and done that myself.

And so the first of my Healthy living advice Living Tips for you is: the only person who really knows what's best for you is you! Unfortunately most of us are not encouraged to trust and believe in ourselves. We tend to be very influenced by other people's opinions and Useful healthy habits many times, we follow advice that does not necessarily feel right. The reason we ignore that feeling is because we are taught to ask for advice and follow it.

Another one of my Healthy Living Tips for your Physical Wellness will let you know that there are very effective ways out there that will work alongside any treatment you might be under.

Keep your weight in a healthy range. Being obese or overweight is hard on your heart. The larger your body the more blood flow you need. Your heart enlarges to compensate for weight and this leads to heart diseases and issues.

The most important group of foods, and the one that is most often the cause of poor diets, is fruit and vegetables. There is nothing particularly innovative about this advice; everyone knows that you need to eat your fruit and vegetables. The main problem is that so few people actually consume the seven to ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables they are supposed to have each day. And when they do eat fruit and vegetables, it is in forms that include added sugar, salt or fat.

These 5 guidelines are just a start. In the following weeks, I will look at each topic in depth and give more specific advice. Until then, work on following the above rules and you will soon feel healthier.
